- EnvironmentTCO Certified first to include combination of ergonomics, emissions, energy and ecology requirements in a single certification. Creates criteria in TCO’95 for limiting hazardous substances in IT products several years before legislation.
1995 – TCO’95 launched as a successor to TCO’92.
The certification expands to include criteria for ergonomic design and the environment. The combination of criteria makes TCO Certified unique. Expansion to include visual ergonomics / image quality, recycling, restrictions of hazardous substances – seven years before similar measures were included in the EU’s RoHS and WEEE directives.

Addressing the growing e-waste problem
Several years before hazardous materials legislation, TCO ‘95 restricted the use of heavy metals, CFCs, chlorinated and brominated flame retardants and required all plastic components to be coded for easier recycling.

– Health & Safety. Energy Efficiency. Emissions.TCO Development paves the way to deal with health concerns among computer display users. IT products contain hazardous materials, emit excessive electromagnetic fields and have no energy saving function. With criteria to reduce these hazards, TCO’92 is launched and a sustainable IT movement begins.
Computers of the 1980s and early 1990s included several health, safety and environmental concerns
- Light text on dark background = poor visual ergonomics
- Brominated / chlorinated flame retardants = health / environmental hazard
- Poor image quality
- Lead in panel glass, batteries & solder – up to 3.5 kilos
- End of life = landfill, export for incineration
- Hazardous materials – mercury, cadmium, arsenic, hexavalent chromium, PBDE & PBB Flame retardants, PVC
- High levels of electro-magnetic emissions
- No sleep mode = high energy consumption
1986 – “Screen checker” is published in 8 languages and provided computer users practical advice on health & safety issues associated with display use.
1980s-early 1990s – Based on increasing health-related complaints from computer users, TCO conducts comparative tests of computer displays, measuring electro-magnetic emissions.
1992- Intertek Sweden appointed test lab for TCO product testing.
1992 – TCO enters into collaboration with the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, a partner in the development of TCO’92.
1992 – TCO’92 – the first TCO certification for displays includes criteria for reduced electromagnetic fields and automatic power down.
